Our hurlers had a really bad day on Portlaoise yesterday. Needless to say no player had planned to have a bad day but it didn’t happen for most of the players on the pitch and indeed management had a poor day as well. If you were rating the individual performances yesterday only one or two players would get more than 5. Yes we missed Eoghan O’Donnell, Liam Rushe and Cian O’Callaghan but that doesn’t explain such an insipid performance. Tactically we lost the battle from early on. The short passing game never really worked and as a result our full forward line was starved of possession. Laois made much better use of the short puck out down their right wing and we failed to stop it. We had very few long range shots at goal whereas Laois got some wonderful long distance points. Man to man most of our players came out second best.
I can recall a similar depressing defeat in the Daly era when we lost to Antrim in Croke Park. But we learned from it and it made the team stronger and they came back to win a league title and a Leinster final. The 2019 squad can do likewise.
Needless to say that great night in Parnell Park when we defeated Galway will be the standout moment for all of us. We thank the players and management for their commitment during the year. We should not let one bad performance define our year.
We look forward now to a great club championship.
To all Fodh fans have a lovely Summer and bring on 2020.
