Underage & Colleges
DUBLIN DERBY… and a good day for hurling. That will be the Leinster Colleges Senior ‘A’ Hurling Championship clash between Coláiste Eoin and Dublin North. It’s scheduled for next Monday, February 8 at 2pm in O Toole’s Pitch in Ayrefield. Eoin’s progress in the competition as a stand-alone school is a performance of real merit. The Stillorgan lads beat St Mary’s CBS, Enniscorthy last week. Eoin hit some terrific points. “It was a tremendous effort from the lads and it was a big win for Dublin hurling,” said Eoin’s vice-principal, Proinsias de Poire. And the good thing is that, no matter...
DCU 3-11 St Pat’s 3-5 D.C.U. advanced to the quarter finals of the Division 1 Championship after a comfortable 9 point victory over St.Pats, Drumcondra in a bittery cold St.Clares on Monday afternoon. The home side were on top through out although St.Pats took the lead early on when former Kilkenny minor captain Canice Maher expertly converted a 21 yard free for the opening goal. Ian Duggan(Pats) and JJ.Lennon (D.C.U.) exchanged a couple of pointed frees soon after before D.C.U. responed with a goal of their own with a classy finnish from Maher’s Kilkenny team-mate Walter Walsh. St.Pats spurned a...
Red-hot McGrath gets porous Colaiste Eoin defence out of jail COLAISTE EOIN 1-16 ST MARY’S 4-4 Thursday January 28 2010 Sean McGrath, who finished the game with a personal tally of 1-10, inspired Colaiste Eoin to an impressive victory over St Mary’s CBS in Enniscorthy. McGrath struck over some excellent points from frees as Colaiste Eoin led 0-7 to 0-4, but when Colm Kehoe struck the first of his three goals before the break, it left the sides level, 0-7 to 1-4, at the interval. With McGrath in top form, Colaiste Eoin assumed control, but a 39th-minute goal from Kehoe...
St Benildus 5-10 Ardscoil Rís 4-6 Fourteen-man St Benildus claimed the Dublin Schools Junior A Hurling title on Wednesday following a physically imposing and clinical performance against a brave Ardscoil Rís side at O’Toole Park. St Benildus did not have it all their own way, but they found what was needed at the right time to bring the cup back to Stillorgan. St Benildus possessed strength and skill in their forward line and their ability to drop ball around the square proved irresistible in the final reckoning. The Stillorgan school had to absorb the loss of Luke Moran,...

The Dublin South u-15 team proved victorious last weekend in the Leinster u-15 hurling tournament hosted by St Martin’s of Wexford when they were crowned Michael Foley Cup Champions. The side, managed by Ray McKenna (Ballyboden St Endas) and Denis Gorey (Kilmacud Crokes), recorded group wins over Wexford (3-6 to 1-4) and Antrim (1-10 to 0-4) before progresssing to meet Kildare in the semi-final that they won by 5-7 to 1-5. In a closely fought final, the “South” edged out South Kilkenny by 1-6 to 0-7 with Evan Flanagan saving a second half penalty. Well done to all involved....
Laois 1-9 Dublin 1-6 Dublin minor hurlers crashed out of this year’s Leinster MHC when losing to Laois in the quarter final played in O Moore Park on Saturday last. In wet and windy conditions, the young Dubs never hurled with any great fluency and the greater work rate of the Laois players over the hour saw them through to a semi-final meeting against Wexford. Dublin went in at the interval leading by 1-2 to 0-3. Sean McGrath scored the goal in the 26th minute when he batted a delivery from Fergal Breathnach to the net. Earlier in that half...
Col Eoin 5-12 Portlaoise 2-2 Col Eoin are Leinster juvenile “B” hurling champions for the second successive year after a comprehenssive win over Portlaoise in the final in Dr Cullen Park Carlow. Captain, Oisín Ó Ruairc, lead the way for the Stillorgan side and finished with a personal tally of 4-6. The Col Eoin players were superior in all positions and Ó Ruairc was ably assisted in the full forward line by Colm O Néill and Conor Ó Duibhir. The Dublin side went in at half time leading by 2-8 to 0-2. Laois hopes were raised a minute into the second...
Dublin play Laois in the quarter-final of the Leinster MHC in Portlaoise on Saturday @ 3pm. The winners of this tie will meet Wexford in Wexford Park in the semi-final. Having been well beaten by Wexford in Round 1 of the championship, minor Dublin manager Martin McKenna is looking for a big performance from his charges against Laois. “We underperformed against Wexford the last day ” said McKenna ” but we are now looking to put that right. The lads have trained well since the defeat and are now looking forward to Saturday’s game”. The fact that the winner will meet...
Dublin South schools’ juvenile hurling team scored an impressive 3-12 to 2-4 win over Dublin North in the semi-final of the Leinster juvenile “A” hurling (Dr Barry Cup) in Parnell Park on Monday. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, the “South” built up a commanding 2-7 to 0-1 lead going into the half-time break. The “North” played with far more conviction in the second half, but despite thier best efforts were unable to greatly reduce the score deficit. Dublin South will now play the winner of the second semi-final between St Kieran’s Col and Good Counsel New Ross in the Dr...
Wexford 1-19 Dublin 1-9 Wexford minor hurlers outclassed Dublin in the Leinster championship when running out winners on a scoreline of 1-19 to 1-9 in Parnell Park on Saturday. From the throw in, the Slaneysiders showed their intent and wing forward Liam Óg McGovern was outstanding. Early points from McGovern and Niall Murphy edged Wexford into a three point lead. Dublin forwards failed to make an impression against the opposition’s solid defence. A Danny Sutcliffe point in the 21st minute was the only score from play for the Dubs in the first half and three pointed frees from Sean McGrath...
