Con Ryan, former Junior Board chairman and secretary, has passed away at Deerpark Nursing Home in Tipperary. Con, along with his good friend John Leonard, ran the Junior Hurling Board in Dublin from 1975 until it joined up with the Senior Board. Con made a big effort to promote hurling especially in clubs that played football only. Before coming to Dublin he was involved with Golden in Tipperary. The story goes that he was managing a juvenile team and they were playing the neighbouring parish Bansha in a friendly. No referee turned up so Con prevailed on the Bansha manager to stand in and referee the game. Con was so impressed by the quality of officiating that he contacted the Tipperary chairman and recommended that he check out this potential referee. The young man’s name was John Moloney who became the top referee in Ireland for many years.
May Con’s gentle soul rest in peace.
