Dublin 4-20 Dublin IT 1-12
Dublin made a winning start to their Bord na Mona Walsh Cup campaign after they overcame DIT by 17 points in their Group 2 encounter at a rain-sodden Parnell Park last night.Incoming manager Ger Cunningham selected a relatively experienced side and both Paul Ryan and Conal Keaney landed a brace of points apiece to push Dublin four clear by the fifth minute. Willie McGrath’s fine score in reply briefly stemmed Dublin’s control but Eamonn Dillon added two points in quick succession to inch the hosts further clear after nine minutes.
It failed to act as a springboard however as DIT gradually began to exert themselves on the tie with centre-forward Derek McNicholas handing Peter Kelly a difficult assignment.
The Westmeath player added four points with Dublin’s lead trimmed to a solitary point after Justin Cahill’s fine score in the 26th minute.
However, they failed to trouble the umpires for the remainder of the half with Dublin regaining their supremacy as Dillon shrugged off a number of defenders before calmly slotting home from close range in the 28th minute.
The half ended with Dublin building on their lead through scores by Niall McMorrow, Cian Boland and Ryan as they enjoyed a rather flattering 1-11 to 0-7 interval buffer.
Despite Michael Lee trimming DIT’s deficit with a superb goal within three minutes of the resumption, Dublin responded with six points on the bounce as Dillon began to exert a massive influence.
A goal by Liam Rushe settled the issue with both Niall McMorrow and sub David Treacy adding goals in the final six minutes to leave Dublin in rude health ahead of Sunday’s clash with Antrim.
