DUBLIN SOUTH 1-14
CARLOW SCHOOLS 0-5
EARLY indications were very positive. For Carlow Schools in their first ever game in the Leinster senior “A” hurling championship. After ten minutes of play in Pairc Ui Bhrian’s ‘top pitch’ on Saturday and the ‘new kids on the block’ led 0-3 to 0-0.
Craig Wall scored three points in the 1st, 6th and 9th minutes from frees from 60, 20, and 30 (metres). The combined Carlow Schools, backed by the wind, were hurling very well at that juncture, contesting every ball with conviction, working very hard.Dublin South opened their scoring account with points in the 13th and 15th minutes, the second a lovely score from Kevin McMahon before Wall pointed his fourth Carlow point from a free from close range and Karl Russell added a Dublin point on 15 minutes.Brian McCarthy, who impressed at mid-field for Dublin South pointed a free on 18 minutes to level the scores and followed up with a point on 20 minutes to inch his side 0-5 to 0-4 in front.
Kevin Ward scored the game’s only goal on 26 minute when getting his stick to a crossed ball from the right wing to steer the ball into Carlow rigging. Ross McGowan added point from puck-out and only a good tackle by full-back David Galway prevented another Metropolitan goal before McCarthy pointed free on call of half-time to leave the Sky Blues leading 1-7 to 0-4.
David Galway scored Carlow’s only point of the half in the 53rd minute after free from right corner fell to him 25m out in front of goal. Dublin were on top for this half and had reeled off five second half points in a row prior to that, two further McCarthy frees supplemented by three terrific points from dapper Naoise Greene, the corner forward landing three of the sweetest left hand shots you could care to see.
After their brisk start Carlow’s performance was disappointing but the safe handling of alert goalkeeper Michael Lawlor, the sturdy defending of skipper Paul Doyle, David Galway and Sean Murphy as well as the workmanlike mid-field play of Craig Wall and Pauric Ahern kept the red, yellow and green flag bravely waving to the bitter end.
South Dublin had good performances from Frank O’Donoghue and Tom Devlin, who anchored a steady back-line with Brian McCarthy, Karl Russel, Glen Whelan and Naoise Greene the stars further afield.
The Dubs advance to play St Kieran’s College, reigning All Ireland champions, in the quarter final.
