Dublin North 1-8
St Mary’s Enniscorthy 1-10
Dublin North College’s senior hurlers failed in their bid to reach the Leinster colleges’ “A” quarter final when losing to St Mary’s Enniscorthy in the first round in Carlow. The Dubs, playing with a strong wind in the first half, failed to convert their superior possession into scores. A half-time lead of 0-5 to 0-3 loked anything but safe for the Dubs and so it proved.
The Dublin side did extend the lead to 0-6 to 0-3 early in the second half. In the 35th minute, a speculative shot from Tommy Storey for Mary’s slipped through the fingers of Dublin keeper Shane McDermott to level the scores. The Dublin keeper, apart from this score, had a faultless display of goalkeeping throughout the game.
Further points for Mary’s from Jamie Reck and Niall Murphy put the Wexford side into a five point lead. Enniscorthy goalie, Conor O Leary, denied Dublin with a series of fine saves in the second half. In the 58th minute, Dubs corner forward, Mikey Brennan, did score a goal, but it came too late to save his side’s championship ambitions.
Full back Gareth Cronin was outstanding for Dublin North, while Dan Byrne, Frankie Power, Darren Kelly and Mikey Brennan played well throughout.
