Dubs knock Cats for six but Kilkenny pull off great escape
KILKENNY 5-16 DUBLIN 6-12
Dublin hit Kilkenny for six goals but were edged out in the dying moments in this Allianz NHL Division 1A clash at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny on Suday afternoon.
Anthony Daly’s men battled heroically to the end but were overtaken with the finishing line in sight as the struggled to contain the Leinster and All-Ireland champions who had the advantage of an extra man following the dismissal of Ryan O’Dwyer in the 43rd minute (second yellow).
Despite that sending off Danny Sutcliffe rifled home his second goal of the tie in the 54th minute to push Dublin eight points clear but the home side rallied with goals from Colin Fennelly and Riche Hogan in quick succession.
The drama was only just beginning though as Eamon Dillon pulled off a great fetch before driving the sliotar to the net for Dublin to establish a six-point advantage.
But it was the Cats who had the last say as a point from Hogan and goals from Richie Power and in the 70th minute, Matt Ruth, saw Kilkenny pull of their version of the great escape.
Dublin led 3-8 to 1-9 at the interval. Paul Ryan grabbed the first goal in the tenth minute but he has to go off with a hamstring injury shortly afterwards with 1-3 already to his name at that stage
Sutcliffe, who finished with 2-3 of no less a stellar name as Tommy Walsh, was the story of the first half as he scored a superb goal as well as playing a central role in Conor McCormack’s goal before the interval.
Going down the home straight it looked like the Dubs would hold on for a famous victory as Joey Boland and Niall Corcoran defied the odds to keep back the Kilkenny tide, however, as if to prove their status in the game Brian Cody’s men conjured up some late, late magic to preserve their 100 per cent opening to their league campaign.
