Elizabeth Mc Nicholas, daughter of John Mc Nicholas of the Dublin County Board, is a twenty-eight year old former Camogie star from Lucan, who is confined to bed for the last four years due to the back bending condition of scoliosis, and other debilitating ailments, including brain and spinal injuries.
Elizabeth has had numerous unsuccessful surgeries over the past few years, eventually leading to her undergoing a number of lifesaving spinal surgeries in the world-renowned, JCI accredited, Acıbadem Maslak Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey, last year. She spent 3+ months in hospital in Istanbul and continues to travel over to attend her spinal specialist there for treatment. Despite a consultant referral for treatment abroad, Elizabeth was refused public funding and her family has made a moving appeal for public donations to help her overcome her spinal and brain injuries and to help fund her ongoing treatment, rehabilitation and other medical expenses.
She was first diagnosed with the condition just before she sat her Leaving Certificate examination in 2008 at Coláiste Cois Life, Lucan. Elizabeth is a trainee teacher in St. Angela’s College in Sligo but she has understandably had to forego her studies. An online donate website has been established to hopefully reach the target to cover the complete costs of Elizabeth’s ongoing treatment, rehabilitation and other medical expenses.
Elizabeth lives in the family home in Esker Park, Lucan. Her Dad, John, is on the executive board of Parnell Park and her brother, Seán, is a hurling referee in Dublin. As mentioned, Elizabeth has brain and spinal injuries and lives with spinal problems, including scoliosis, kyphosis and other spinal conditions. She has just 33% lung function and also has hypothalmic/ pituitary problems, leading to a life-threatening adrenal insufficiency (Addissons’s Disease) and Narcolepsy with Cataplexy whuch causes sudden bouts of muscle weakness. She is a brave girl who is fighting hard to lead a normal life and continue her studies. See the ‘Team Elizabeth’ Facebook page online for further information and updates.
Lucan Sarsfields are holding a Bumper Table Quiz as a fundraiser for Elizabeth’s cause, on Friday, 15th February, in the Clubhouse at the 12th Lock, Newcastle Road. The Quiz commences at 8.30pm sharp. Tables of four cost €40 and we will have a huge raffle also. We hope to get a massive turn out of support to enable us to raise as much as possible for this extremely deserving cause. We would be grateful if you could spread the word about this Quiz to your family, friends and colleagues.
We would ask adult teams and managements in the Club, voluntary groups and schools in and around Lucan, to consider forming teams for this very general Quiz. Come along and have an enjoyable evening in supporting this vital fundraiser for a Lucanian.
If for any reason you can’t attend, please consider donating online to www.gofundme.com/u4wpzkjz (Team Elizabeth Medical Fund). Or you can leave a donation in an envelope with the bar staff anytime, clearly marked Elizabeth Mc Nicholas’ Recovery Fund. All monies received will be duly receipted.
