Dublin 4-18 Laois 2-17
Supporters were much happier leaving after the game yesterday than the previous Sunday. Having played with the aid of the elements in the first half there were fears that a three point half time lead would not be good enough. But after half time Dublin, playing into a very strong wind, found their feet and two quick goals in the first five minutes settled them down and they continued to control the game until the end. Mattie Kenny was delighted with the attitude of the players and felt that we could have had a few more goals in the first half except for the brilliance of the Laois keeper. The injuries to Eamon Dillon, Mark Schutte and Cian O’Callaghan were the only disappointment and hopefully the two week break will give them time to recover. Shane Barrett, Liam Rushe, Fiontan McGibb, Paul Ryan and David Treacy are back in training and they will strengthen the panel for the games ahead.
John Treacy was delighted with the performance of his camogie team as they put it up to the All-Ireland champions Galway and were it not for two frees given away due to the new rule of dropping the hurley they could have caused a massive upset. They clapped the Galway team onto the pitch but the Dublin team were clapped off at the end by their supporters. Their next game is away to Tipperary and they will have some of the St.Vincents girls back by then. All in all a very promising start to the season.
The coming weekend is Fitzgibbon Cup weekend which DCU are hosting. Last year’s winners, UCC, take on DCU in the semi-final at 4pm on Saturday and this game will be a classic as both teams have a lot of intercounty players. DCU have 17 Dubs on the panel including, Donal Burke, Conor Burke, Lee Gannon, Daire Gray, Rian McBride, Fergal Whitely and the two Currie brothers. The final will be on Sunday. See the fixtures for all the times and games.
