Dublin South Cols 3-11 , Good Counsel 1-13
Neil Gorey’s late goal secured Dublin South Colleges a deserved victory at New Ross yesterday.
Heavy rain made for slippery conditions, yet both sides still managed to serve up some quality hurling.
Little separated the sides through the opening quarter, at the end of which Dublin South Colleges led 0-4 to 0-2, through points from James Roche (three) and Fionn Maguire, while Mark Aylward responded with the home side’s points.
Nine minute before the break, a long ball into the Good Counsel goalmouth broke kindly, leaving Maguire with a tap-in.
Following this break- through, they went on to lead 1-7 to 0-7 at the interval, with points from Aylward and Michael Redmond keeping the hosts in touch.
Three points — 1-9 to 0-9 — still separated the sides at the end of the third quarter, but with nine minutes remaining, a Jamie Desmond goal pushed the winners into a 2-9 to 0-11 lead.
Good Counsel responded two minutes later with an Eoin Kelly goal to leave the minimum separating the sides.
However, Gorey pounced for the Dubliners’ third goal two minutes from the end to make sure of a hard-earned success.
