Two hundred and thirty people attended the 12th Annual Friends of Dublin Hurling Celebration Night at The Red Cow Hotel on Friday last. Michael O’Grady outlined at the outset why it was called a celebration night. DCU, with 18 Dubs on board, were just pipped by an all-star UL team in The Fitzgibbon Cup final in February. In March Cuala defended their All-Ireland crown and became only the 5th club to win back to back All-Irelands. In April Dublin North won the Leinster Colleges final when defeating St. Kierans College. In June the Dublin seniors came to life and scored an average 0f 2 – 19 in their four Leinster championship games and only conceded one goal in the four games. In July our minors won Leinster defeating Kilkenny on a scoreline of 6 -19 to 7 – 12. The winning schools – Griffeen Valley ETNS and St. Mac Dara’s were delighted with their prize of a set of jerseys and a wall plaque. Kevins Hurling and Camogie Club and Naomh Fionnbarra celebrated their wins as well. The players of the year awards went to Chris Crummey, Aisling Carolan and Paddy Smyth. Tom O’Donnell received The Lar Foley Hall of Fame Award for his contribution to Dublin hurling over many years. Tom retires from his job this week and he will be heading back to Slievenamon in the near future. We thank him and wish him and Catherine many years of health and happiness. Mattie Kenny addressed the attendance and we were delighted with his positivity and plans for Dublin hurling. 2019 can’t come fast enough. All those who attended got a 44 page booklet, full of Dublin hurling stats etc. By the way you can see photos of the night by visiting IlivePhotos .com. Thanks to Martina McGilloway for this. All those who sign up for 2019 in the coming months will receive a copy of this booklet. People can sign up online at www.fodh.ie.
