Shay Boland, manager of last year’s minor hurling team and currently involved with this year’s u-17 squad, played left-half back on the Dublin team beaten by Kilkenny in the 1991 Leinster final. His abiding memory is of getting a broken thumb in a clash with Christy Heffernan. This happened midway in the second half but manager Lar Foley believed he could still do the job so he left him on the field. He recalls keeping Kilkenny scoreless for about 20 minutes. Like Damien Byrne he recalls the moment when John Twomey’s long distance free almost went all the way to the net in the dying seconds. But it was not to be.Like Damien, Shay is now putting alot back into the game with his own club Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh and the Dublin squads and county teams.
