St Vincent’s 2-15 St Pat’s Palmerstown 1-12
NO delay over the tea tables last night. A tasty treat lay in store down at Pairc Naomh Uinsionn. Ronan Fallon against Liam Rushe in Group 2 of the Evening Herald Dublin SH ‘A’ Championship.
Two highly respected Dublin colleagues on the dancefloor — Fallon at No 6 for Vins and Rushe at No11 for Pat’s. As it turned out, they didn’t really have that many tangos, but any time Liam got near the sliotar, the Marino clampers came out in force. Both sides made the last eight last term. Pat’s will be happy enough with this display. They have a firm defence. Centre half-back Darren Mooney especially impressed, as did right half-back Graham Dunne, who hit three splendid points.
Against the wind, which blew into the car-park end, Pat’s deserved to be level at half-time, 1-6 each. Vincent’s enjoyed a decisive spell in the early pages of the restart, and that helped them to lead for most of the way by six clear points.
The opening goal came in the 19th minute. Eoin Drumgoole had replaced Mossy McGrane, who pulled a hamstring. Drumgoole’s effort from the right was batted out by Pat’s keeper Conor Haugh, but Colm O’Flaherty knocked in the rebound.
Pat’s had a goal of their own three minutes later, a well-struck penalty from the talented Shane Stapleton. The Glenaulin side almost worked a second goal seven minutes into the second period but Aidan Glennon missed the pocket by inches.
The hosts were three points ahead at that stage, and their second goal, in the 38th minute, owed much to superb play from full-back Declan Qualter, with Pádraig Fleury doing the rest in some style.
That gave Vincent’s a tight grip on the controls. Damien Russell began to hum, and Ruairí Trainor, Mark Chawke, Cian McBride, Shane O’Neill and Drumgoole will also be pleased with their evening’s work. Defenders Dan Byrne and Graham Kelly were Palmerstown princes.
