BALLYBODEN ST ENDA’S held off a late rally from Offaly’s Coolderry to bag the Leinster senior club hurling Division 1 title after a competitive affair in O’Moore Park
Yesterday’s 0-18 to 1-14 victory served as some revenge for their reverse at the hands of the Offaly men in the 2011 decider.
While there was just a point between the sides on this occasion, there could be little doubt surrounding the merit of ‘Boden’s win.
The south Dublin side were never behind and after the early settling-in period that saw the teams share four points, they established a lead that they were never to lose.
Coolderry showed all the tenacity you would expect from an outfit representing Offaly and they kept themselves in the game when on the brink of falling away on a number of occasions.
Ballyboden always found another gear when required, although they would have been mightily relieved to hear the final whistle with their dogged opponents still breathing down their necks.
David Curtin contributed eight points to the winning total and he had three on the board early on as St Enda’s established an early advantage.
Kevin Connolly, Damian Murray and Martin Corcoran kept the scoreboard ticking over for Coolderry, but Ballyboden’s physical advantage was particularly notable and it helped set up a number of scoring opportunities.
David O’Connor, Gavin Corrigan and Simon Lambert, who was a second-half sub in Dublin’s Leinster SHC replay victory over Wexford on Saturday night, converted just three of those and that was their advantage at the break, 0-11 to 0-8. Coolderry began the second half well with points from Andrew Hall and Murray, but Curtin and substitute Emmet Carroll, two former Dublin senior forwards, propelled Ballyboden five points clear and seemingly cruising to an inevitable win.
Their rivals threw everything at them, though and Dean Curran and this year’s Dublin U21 ‘keeper Conor Dooley had to be very alert to deny them.
There was nothing they could do, though, when Barry Teehan rifled an unstoppable shot high to the corner of the net with 30 seconds of normal time remaining.
Connolly snapped over a lovely point from the next attack and suddenly, the nerves of Ballyboden supporters were jangling. Fortunately for Boden though, time was their friend and they kept their noses in front to take the honours.
