Fingal hurlers started their 2009 season with an impressive win against 2008 Nicky Rackard Cup runners-up Louth in the first round of the Keogh Cup at Swords. In wet and windy conditions, Fingal took full advantage of the gale in their backs during the first half.
After a sluggish opening ten minutes during in which both sides exchanged points, the game burst into life when Fingal corner forward Cian O’Mahony blasted to the visitors net. The home side dominated the rest of the half and were full value for their 3-6 to 0-4 interval lead, with O’Mahony completing a first half hat-trick.
This young experimental Fingal side showed a tremendous work ethic in the second half and restricted their opponents to some speculative long range shooting in the third quarter. With only 10 minutes remaining Fingal by 10 points and it was only a late goal from an uncharacteristic slip by impressive debutante goalkeeper Robbie Fennelly that put a gloss on the Louth total.
In addition to O’Mahony, Fingal had impressive performers in Dermot Vaughan, Niall Feeney and Niall Ring in defence, Ross McGarry at midfield and Paul McAllister and captain Dominic Harris in the forward line.
Fingal will play DCU, who defeated Mayo in round 1 on a score-line of 1-13 to 0-9, in the second round on Sunday, 18th January. In other games played, Wicklow defeated TCD by 1-19 to 2-5, while DIT were impressive in the second half of their match when defeating Kildare by 3-15 to 2-6.
