Dublin U-21 hurling manager Joe Fortune admits that he would love to have Ciaran Kilkenny and Cormac Costello available to him.
Kilkenny’s cruciate ligament injury rules him out of this year’s Leinster U-21 HC campaign, which gets underway against Laois tonight, while Costello has decided to channel all his energies into football this year.
“People would say Joe Fortune has a good team, in a minor final 2011 and 2012 but they (Kilkenny and Costello) are not playing,” the manager pointed out to the Irish Daily Star.
“I know his mum and dad – Dublin secretary, John – would love to seem him (Costello) playing both.
“People are talking about Cormac Costello – he deserves a proper shot. He needs to give this football a real go this year and I’ve no problem at all.
“Cormac and Ciaran, they were high-profile, household names and the guys that have come in have earned their spot and I’m sure Ciaran and Cormac would be happy to see them give it a good lash.”
He added: “It’s not a shut door. As far as I’m concerned Cormac is welcome back at any stage.
“We spoke to the players. We didn’t put too much pressure on. It’s hard for them. If they want to play hurling it was put to them we’d love to have them.
“Again, there were a couple of U-21 footballers we’d love to have had. If those lads are really determined to make that senior football panel you can’t stand in their way either.
“You want guys that are wanting to hurl and you need guys who are 100 per cent committed I think for it to be beneficial.”
