TIPPERARY captain Eoin Kelly insists Dublin are still “genuine contenders” to beat Kilkenny on Sunday despite their crippling injury list and the Mullahoran man reckons the new-found depth of Anthony Daly’s panel will compensate for their growing band of absentees.
Kelly stressed that he was “dead impressed with Dublin again” in their victory over Galway last Saturday in Tullamore and cited the strength of the Dubs bench as the clearest evidence yet that they can maintain a permanent spot at hurling’s top table.
“You need 20 lads, that’s why Dublin are where they are now,” said Kelly. “You needs to make an impact when they came in and that’s what Kilkenny have as well. If you’re a wing-back and seeing your man, Daire Plunkett, coming on. You’re not going to catch him when he comes on, after 60 minutes you won’t catch him.
“What I’m saying is they have subs to come on to make an impact and they are a serious force. I’m looking forward to the Leinster final. They’re genuine contenders for the Leinster final. If they get through they’ll come on and on, whoever meets them down the road in an All-Ireland semi-final, you can imagine it, 55 or 60,000 there, 40 of them from Dublin? They’re able to play, they’re serious, and their physical presence is huge.”
